What is Navgraha Puja?
Navgraha Puja is the worship of the nine grahas, or celestial influences, recognised in Hindu tradition and Jyotisha: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes).
Each graha is traditionally associated with its own deity, mantra, colour, grain and offering. The puja honours all nine together, often with a dedicated Navagraha Homam.
When is Navgraha Puja performed?
Navgraha Puja is commonly performed:
- As part of Griha Pravesh, weddings and other major ceremonies
- On birthdays or at the start of a new phase of life
- When suggested by a family Pandit or astrologer after consultation
- As a general shanti (peace) ritual for the household
Your Pandit can help you choose a suitable date and time (muhurat) for your occasion.
Traditional purpose and significance
In Hindu belief the grahas are associated with different aspects of life. Devotees perform Navgraha Puja to honour all nine, seek their blessings and pray for balance, peace and harmony.
It is a devotional ritual rather than a guaranteed remedy. If it has been suggested to you for a particular reason, discuss it openly with your Pandit so the puja reflects your family's tradition.
What is generally required
Typical preparations and samagri for Navgraha Puja include:
- A Navagraha mandala or nine seats arranged as per tradition
- Navadhanya (nine grains) associated with the nine grahas
- Cloths and flowers in the colours traditionally linked to each graha
- Samidha (sacred wood) of different kinds, if a homam is included
- Kalash, ghee, havan samagri, kumkum, akshat, fruits and sweets
Requirements vary by tradition, region and family custom. Your Pandit will confirm the exact list, and whether samagri is arranged by you or by them, before the ceremony.
Duration: Often around 2 to 3 hours, especially when a Navagraha Homam is included.
