What is Marriage Puja?

In Hindu tradition, marriage (Vivah) is one of the most important sanskaras, or life-cycle rituals. The ceremony unites two people and two families, with Agni, the sacred fire, as the witness.

While customs vary greatly between communities, core rituals often include Ganesh Puja, Kanyadaan, Var Mala (Jaimala), Mangal Phere around the sacred fire, Saptapadi (the seven steps and vows), Sindoor Daan and the tying of the Mangalsutra.

When is Marriage Puja performed?

Pandits are commonly booked for the wedding day and for related ceremonies such as:

  • Engagement (Sagai or Nischayam) and Tilak ceremonies
  • Pre-wedding pujas such as Ganesh Sthapana, Haldi and Mandap Muhurat
  • The main wedding ceremony (Vivah)
  • Arya Samaj or simplified Vedic wedding ceremonies
  • Post-wedding rituals such as Griha Pravesh of the bride or Satyanarayan Katha

Your Pandit can help you choose a suitable date and time (muhurat) for your occasion.

Traditional purpose and significance

The wedding rituals are performed to seek blessings for the couple's new life together and to make sacred promises of companionship, duty and mutual respect. Saptapadi in particular represents the vows the couple take together.

Because traditions differ so much between Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and other communities, it is important to find a Pandit familiar with your customs and preferred language.

What is generally required

Typical preparations and samagri for Marriage Puja include:

  • Kalash, coconut, mango leaves, flowers and garlands for Var Mala
  • Mangalsutra, sindoor, rings and other items specific to your tradition
  • Havan samagri, ghee, rice, puffed rice (laja) and other ritual offerings
  • Clothing and items for Kanyadaan and family rituals, as per custom

Requirements vary by tradition, region and family custom. Your Pandit will confirm the exact list, and whether samagri is arranged by you or by them, before the ceremony.

Duration: The core ceremony can range from about an hour to several hours, depending on tradition and the rituals included.
